According to the joint statement issued on May 15 in Beijing during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to China, the two countries have agreed to expand border trade through Lipu-Lekh Pass. The 28th point of the joint communiqué states that ‘the two sides agreed to hold negotiation on augmenting the list of traded commodities, and expand border trade at the Lipu-Lekh Pass.’</div>

The main intention of the joint communiqué is to recognize and enhance border areas co-operation through border trade, pilgrimage by people of the two countries. It also agreed to effectively promote mutual trust, and broaden co-operation, so as to transform the border into a bridge of cooperation and exchange.</div>

From Nepali perspective, there could be a question as to whether India and China needed to obtain Nepal’s consent to expand border trade at Lipu-Lekh Pass, a Far-Western point of Nepal, which Nepal claims to be a part of its territory. The Lipulekh Pass is located at the Nepal-China borderline. However, Indian para-military forces have occupied it since 1962 after the Sino-India border war. It is an ancient route for traders and pilgrims transiting between Nepal and Tibet.</div>

Of Nepali origin, Gurkha soldiers made a large part of the British Indian forces that fought for the empire in many places in India and beyond. Between the two world wars, they also fought in the Third Anglo Afghan War of 1919 and then participated in numerous campaigns on the northwest frontier to safeguard the border regions.</div>

<br><br>Before the Himalayan nation built its first highway in 1956 only the capital city had paved roads, and porters were the only means of getting cars to the wealthy Rana dynasty.<div>
<br>Gole had never even heard of cars when he started working as a porter at the age of 20, let alone seen one.<br>Although Chitlang village where he was born in 1922 is just 16 kilometres (10 miles) from Kathmandu, it has only been accessible by car for a decade.<br>His father was a farmer and collected taxes on behalf of the Ranas, who ruled Nepal until 1951 as hereditary prime ministers.</div>

<br>“We never had any money — the Ranas took all the taxes, we had to rely on farming to feed ourselves,” Gole told AFP at his home in Chitlang village.<br>By contrast, the Ranas could afford not only to splash out on Mercedes and Ford cars, but to pay dozens of porters to carry them over the mountains from India.<br><br></div></div>

1816: General Bhimsen Thapa’s Gorkha Forces surrenders to the British, which led to the ratification of Peace and Friendship of Sugauli – “The Sugauli Treaty.” As per the treaty, Nepal lost Sikkim (including Darjeeling), the territories of Kumaon and Garhwal, the territories of Ancient Mithila region and most of the lands of the Madhesh (Terai). The Mechi River became the new eastern border and the Mahakali river the western boundary of the kingdom.</div>
